Languages & Cultural Discovery: Raising Global Citizens, One Word at a Time

At Milestones Academy, we believe that the best gift you can give a young child is the gift of language. Our Languages program introduces Spanish and Chinese to children from infancy through Pre-K using a playful, immersive approach. Through songs, rhymes, stories, and daily interactions, we nurture multilingual learners who approach the world with curiosity, confidence, and cultural awareness.

Step Into Our World of Language Discovery

Our Languages program is built on a simple but powerful idea: young children are natural language learners. Their brains are wired to absorb new sounds, patterns, and words effortlessly through play and positive relationships. We move beyond formal instruction to provide authentic, joyful experiences where language learning is woven into everything we do. Through an intentional, play-based approach rooted in the EYFS framework and aligned with Texas guidelines for language development, we cultivate bilingual, biliterate, and culturally aware children ready for kindergarten and beyond.

Developing Language Learners: Age-Group Deep Dive

Our language program grows alongside your child, honoring the developmental stages outlined in both the EYFS framework and Texas guidelines for language and communication .

Infants (0-18 months): Absorbing the Sounds of Language

Our teachers fill this stage with rich language experiences in Spanish, Chinese, and English. They sing lullabies during quiet moments, narrate care routines with warmth, and respond to every babble as if it were a conversation. Infants learn that their voice matters and that language is a source of comfort and connection.

Toddlers (18-36 months): First Words in Multiple Languages

By age three, children typically recognize about 1,000 words. In our program, this natural capacity is nourished through songs, rhymes, and playful repetition. A toddler might learn "agua" at the water table, "ni hao" during morning greeting, and "ball" on the playground. Mixing languages is normal and temporary: a sign of a growing bilingual brain.

Pre-Schoolers (3-4 years): Putting Words Together

At this stage, children begin combining words into simple phrases in their dominant language, and they may attempt phrases in their new languages too. "Mas agua" or "wo yao" emerge naturally. Our teachers support this by modeling complete sentences without correcting imperfect ones. Storytime becomes more interactive, with children predicting what happens next and retelling familiar tales .

Early Pre-K (4-5 years): Building Conversations

Four-year-olds can hold conversations. In our program, they practice these skills in Spanish and Chinese through guided conversations, show-and-tell, and collaborative projects. Teachers introduce new vocabulary in thematic units, helping children build rich networks of related words. Cultural explorations deepen, with children comparing how families celebrate holidays in different parts of the world .

Pre-K (Kindergarten Readiness): Confident Communicators

Our oldest learners approach kindergarten with confidence in their language abilities. They greet friends and teachers in multiple languages, sing songs independently, and engage in simple conversations. They understand that print carries meaning and may recognize common words in Spanish, Chinese, and English. Most importantly, they have developed a love for language learning that will serve them well throughout their education.

Our Teachers: Language Models and Cultural Guides

Our educators are more than teachers; they are language models who bring Spanish and Chinese to life through their warmth and enthusiasm. Many are native or heritage speakers, providing authentic pronunciation and cultural knowledge. They listen carefully, respond warmly, and create countless opportunities for children to hear and use new words. Most importantly, our teachers model joy in language learning. They sing with abandon, tell stories with expression, and celebrate every child’s attempt to communicate in a new language.

Our Spaces: Language Practice Everywhere

In our classrooms, language is woven into every moment of the day. The morning greeting happens in three languages. Labels with pictures and words in all three languages appear throughout the classroom, building print awareness naturally. Books in Spanish, Chinese, and English fill the library corner, inviting independent exploration. Music from different cultures plays during quiet times. The result is an environment where language learning is not an add-on but a natural, joyful part of every day.

The Milestones Difference: Building Global Citizens

Research shows that bilingual children often demonstrate enhanced problem-solving skills, creative thinking, and cognitive flexibility. They develop greater empathy and understanding of different perspectives. And they carry the gift of multiple languages throughout their lives.

Our approach weaves together the play-based philosophy of the EYFS framework, the developmental guidance of the Texas early learning guidelines, and the cultural richness of authentic language experiences. The result is a program where children don’t just learn Spanish and Chinese, they fall in love with the languages.

Children can begin learning languages from birth. Our program offers Spanish and Chinese exposure starting in infancy, when brains are most receptive to new sounds and patterns .

No. Research shows that mixing languages is a normal, temporary phase of bilingual development. Children naturally sort out languages over time and often demonstrate enhanced cognitive flexibility as a result

Language exposure is woven throughout daily routines rather than confined to a single lesson. Children hear songs, stories, and greetings in both languages during natural moments: morning circle, transitions, meals, and play.

Yes, we offer Mandarin Chinese as part of our language program. Children learn through songs, rhymes, stories, and cultural activities led by teachers with native or heritage proficiency.

That’s perfectly fine! Our program is designed for all children, regardless of home language. Many families choose our program precisely because they want their children to have opportunities they didn’t have.

Our program is informed by the Texas Infant, Toddler, and Three-Year-Old Early Learning Guidelines and the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines for Language and Communication development. While we follow the EYFS framework as our organizing structure, we ensure children meet or exceed Texas expectations for language development.
